Most of us use our computers for a variety of
tasks. For some, the Internet may be their main form of communication
since it allows us to keep in touch with friend, family and coworkers
from around the globe and is much easier and more cost efficient. Other
people use their computers for business activities and may use a variety
of different software programs. Most computers have a plethora of
different programs that we use on a daily basis; these may have come
bundled on your PC, you may after purchased them as after market
accessories or you may have gotten them through a free download or
shareware file. Regardless of where the software came from, most people
do not realize the importance and possibility of security issues when
using software programs.
Most of the software programs that come from a free
download or shareware programs will likely ask you to install another
component. This component may be specific to the particular company and
may be required for the download or for the software to work properly.
You should always fully understand and acknowledge the software’s
components before installing it, or any additional software in the
download. It is a good idea to never install an unknown program. You do
not know whom it is coming from, what they have included in it or
whether or not it could adversely affect your system. Shareware can be a
great way to get the programs you need or want for free, but just keep
in mind that though they are free of charge, they are not free from
risk.
Perhaps one of the worst culprits of gaining
unnecessary or dangerous files is by file sharing. File sharing refers
to the act of people and their “peers” sharing music, videos, software
programs and other files via the Internet. Each time you download a file
from another user you are running the risk of getting malicious files.
Whenever you login to one of these file-sharing databases, you run the
risk of allowing other people to be able to access your system and
personal information. It is a good idea to completely understand how the
process works and take any additional steps to secure and protect your
system.
Being careful about downloading software from the
Internet is also important because of Spyware. It is nearly impossible
for a user to detect whether or not a software program has a Spyware
component attached to it. Hijackers can attach a Spyware program to
nearly any download; this enables them to gain access or your personal
or business computer system and gives them the ability to steal your
personal information. The best way to prevent Spyware from being
installed is to use an anti-Spyware program regularly. The program can
scan individual files or your entire system to detect and clean up any
suspected Spyware programs.
Another way to ensure that your computer is safe
from the many dangers associated with downloading or installing software
is to make sure you system is current and up-to-date. You should always
be sure to use the current and most recent version of your browser. You
can check your browser’s home page regularly and even sign up for
notices of when updates become available. Many companies add updates and
new security patches on a weekly and monthly basis. For some people, it
may seem like a tedious and unnecessary task to constantly update but it
is one of the single most important ways that you can keep yourself safe
online.
In the case of being safe and secure when
downloading or installing new software, it is ultimately the
responsibility of the user to protect him or herself. You can find a
variety of articles, tips and suggestions on how to keep yourself safe
online but those will not be very effective if you do not put them to
use. Keep yourself abreast on new information and updates for your
particular system and file programs. Knowing what to expect online is a
critical first step in protecting yourself. As they say, knowledge is
power, and arming yourself with the appropriate tools and know-how will
keep your Internet experiences running smoothly.
