One of the fastest growing and most detrimental
crimes in the past couple of decades is identity theft. One of the
reasons that identity theft has become so common is because of the
widespread usage of computers or, more specifically, the Internet. The
Internet has given us a whole new world to explore and has opened up
informational possibilities beyond the scope of what anyone could have
imagined 50 years ago. With the expansion of knowledge has also come
outlaw hackers and thieves who have found an entirely new avenue for
their destruction. Like bank robbers of the Wild West, modern identity
thieves are out for their own personal satisfaction and gratification.
Identity theft is a very serious crime and has left many families
financially devastated. It is, however, a very preventable issue as long
as you know what you should expect and red flags to look for.
More and more people are doing business and
shopping online. You are, in most cases, required to give out personal
information such as social security numbers and credit cards to vendors
and others. If you are applying for a job online, many companies will
require the disclosure of your social security number or driver’s
license number. If you are shopping online, you will probably have to
hand over your credit card number. Do you really know whom you are doing
business with? It is very likely that most Internet businesses are
secure and honest but it is always a good idea to know who and what you
are dealing with before handing over your personal information.
Hackers and identity thieves should be of more
concern, however, than worrying about a particular online company. If
you are not protected with firewall and anti-virus software you are just
asking to be victimized. Hackers can locate your personal information
and actually steal your identity. They may do it for fun, just to see if
they can or they may be involved in an underground identity theft ring.
They can steal your personal information and apply for car loans,
mortgages and make purchases on a variety of products without you even
know. This is one reason that it is important to check your credit
report periodically to check for unusual behavior.
Many companies and Internet Service Providers are
doing an excellent job at combating the continued problem of identity
theft. More public service announcements have been produced to warn
people of the dangers of giving out your personal information online.
Some banks have even produced very humorous, yet eerily true,
advertisements about protecting yourself against identity theft. This is
a major problem across the world and we each need to do our part to
protect our families and ourselves. Many people have worked many hard
and long years to achieve financial success and can be severely hurt and
burdened by thieves who would like to take it away from them.
Most companies that you will do business with
online will use encrypted software for all credit card purchases. You
should not, however, consider doing business with a company unless you
fully understand their privacy policy and how they are protecting their
customers from criminals. Most companies will have that information
handy and if they do not, you should not hesitate to call or email them
regarding your personal information. It is your life, information and
safety that are at stake. Continue to do business online but just be
aware of whom you are dealing with and how seriously they take steps to
protect your information.
As long as technology continues to advance and as
long as people continue to use the Internet, you can be assured that
criminals will continue to prey on people who do not protect themselves.
With the wealth of information about identity theft and how to save
yourself from the headache of cleaning up a criminal’s deeds, you should
always be protected. Some of us will take for granted the tools at our
disposal, which is a shame. The information and necessary tools to
protect against identity theft on the Internet are there for the taking,
what you do with the information to protect yourself is, however,
ultimately up to you.
