A firewall is a way to provide protection against some of the Internet’s predators. You can think of a computer firewall in the same way as you would a firewall inside of a building structure. Within a building, a firewall serves as a barrier between rooms in case of a fire. This wall keeps the fire contained in a single room to protect belongings or people in other areas of the structure. A computer firewall serves the same basic purpose. Computer firewalls act as a barrier between your computer and those who want to steal your information. The term firewall has become synonymous with safety and is no longer something that can be considered as an optional protector on the Internet.
It is important to never let your guard down online. You can bet that there are thousands of novice and expert hackers and even automated “bots” that serve to hack into unprotected systems. If your computer is continuously connected to the Internet, you certainly need a firewall installed. You can often get a good firewall protection from your Internet Service Provider (ISP) in their security package; or if you prefer, you can choose from hundreds of products that are currently available on the market. Whatever your preference, a firewall is an absolute necessity to keep your personal information safe from criminal hackers.
While a firewall provides optimum protection against hackers, it is important to realize that the only foolproof way to protect yourself is by disconnecting the Internet. But, in reality, most people are not going to take the time to do this and it could become a big inconvenience. You can, in most cases, rest assured that your computer and information will be protected by the continuous use of a good firewall program. Some experts liken the lack of firewall usage to leaving your car parked in a busy lot with the keys in it; you would not trust your car without the protection of a security system or locks, the same holds true for your computer. Thieves can find many different ways to get your personal information including your social security number, drivers’ license information, bank account information and more. Identity theft is becoming one of the most serious crimes in the United States and abroad; a firewall is one of the best ways to protect you from these white-collar criminals.
Firewalls protect your computer by filtering incoming information from the Internet. It can look at information in small chunks, called packets, and compare that information to filters, which will discard any unneeded, or suspicious information. This helps to keep hackers away from your personal information and keeps them from harvesting the information stored on your computer. With people becoming increasingly concerned about their security and with more people utilizing broadband Internet connections, firewalls have become a standard part of any security package that also includes spy ware blockers, pop up blocker and anti-virus software.
If you take a few minutes to look around the Internet, you will find dozens, if not hundreds, of firewall programs for sale. You can also find many sites that offer free downloads and shareware firewall programs. It is probably wise to look around the Internet for some reviews of the product you are considering installing. Most firewall programs will work just as well as their competition but when you are considering how important your personal information and safety is online, it does not hurt to be extra cautious. The bottom line is this: you need a firewall on your computer and you need one that will offer continuous safety against renegade hackers to protect yourself and your family. More Articles
