Internet Security for Kids

The Internet is full of information and fun things to do. No matter what you are interested in, or what you like to do, you can find it on the Internet. There are millions and millions of websites that were created for kids – just like you! These sites are meant to help you have fun and to help you learn – and you should have your parents help you find these websites, and teach you how to find information that you want on the Internet.

Not all sites that seem like they are for kids are really for kids, however. Sometimes the people who make the sites only try to pretend that their website is for kids – when it really isn’t. If you end up at a website that doesn’t look like it was meant for kids, even though it should be, either surf away from it to another site, or go get your parents to help you decide what to do next. If a website confuses you in anyway, again, go get your parents. You may not understand what you are seeing, or you may not know what you are supposed to do next – your parents will help you figure it out.

Most kids surf the Internet with their parents nearby. But if your parent isn’t nearby, and you have their permission to surf the Internet alone, be careful. Sometimes, you might end up at websites that are upsetting or websites that have things that you know are bad or that you shouldn’t see. If this happens to you, turn off the computer screen, and go get your parents.

Never feel like you did something wrong if you end up at a site that has bad things on it. You didn’t do anything wrong, and you won’t be in trouble, as long as you go get an adult and show them where you ended up. Sometimes, you might see things that embarrass you – but you shouldn’t be embarrassed, and again, you just need to get a parent if this happens.

There are websites where you can get information about your favorite toys, games, and hobbies. There are websites that help you with your homework, and websites where you can find other kids to talk to. There are websites that have rainy day projects for kids and even websites that have ongoing projects for kids all over the world that help you learn or have fun.

There are many websites that have projects for holidays, such as Christmas, Halloween, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and Easter. These sites tell kids how to make decorations, how to make gifts, and even how to make certain foods – like cookies!

If your just bored, have your parents sit with you while you visit Bored.com at http://www.bored.com/ . Here, you will find lots of online activities, funny stories, and games. But not all games and humor are meant for kids, so make sure your parents are with you.

Everything that you can imagine is online. On the Internet, you can even find ideas for games that you can play offline, with your neighborhood friends. You can find books to read, music to listen to, and even go on a scavenger hunt! If you don’t know the rules to a game that you and your friends would like to play offline, you can find those rules online.

The best way to have fun on the Internet is to have your parents help you. If your parents aren’t at home, have your baby sitter or grandparents – or the adult who is looking out for you – help you surf the Internet. Make sure that the adult who is helping you also has permission to help you surf online.

Computers and the Internet will be important tools that you will use for all of your life. Learn how to use them, and how to use them responsibly. If you don’t know how to do something, ask your parent or your teacher to show you how. Some things on the Internet are not appropriate for kids your age, and your parent or teacher will help you find things that are right for you.

Follow your parent’s rules about using the computer and surfing the Internet. If their rule is that you don’t surf the Internet without them being there, then don’t do it. The rules that your parents have set for you are there to help keep you safe. The rules that your parents have about the computer and the Internet may not be the same as the rules that a friend’s parents have. Not obeying these rules can not only get you into trouble, but it can also put you in danger!

If you are at a friend’s house, and their rules are different, you should still follow the rules that your parents set for you at your house – unless you are allowed to do something online that your friend is not allowed to do. If your friend is at your house, they must follow the rules that are set by your parents – unless you are allowed to do something online that they are not allowed to do at their house. It is always a good idea for your parents to talk to their parents to establish what is and is not allowed when it comes to computers and surfing the Internet. This keeps everyone out of trouble!

Sometimes, older brothers or sisters may be allowed to do things online, or visit websites, that you are not allowed to do or visit. This is because they are older, and some of the sites that they are visiting are not appropriate for you. As you get older, different types of websites will become appropriate for you. This decision is made by your parents, and you should abide by the guidelines that they have. If an older brother or sister is allowing you to look at websites that you know are not appropriate for you, you can be in just as much trouble as they are if you don’t tell your parents.
